Happiness is not Promised

Happiness is not Promised

I’ve spent a good part of my life believing that there will be some point in the future where I won’t have to worry about anything; some point where I would be “Happy”. This meant for me that even when I felt angry I just thought happy thoughts. When I felt fear I would go back to what made me happy. I never allowed myself to feel sad because it meant not being happy. You see I thought Happiness was what life was all about. No pain, no sadness, no anger, just happiness.

This can’t be further from the truth.

Happiness is an emotion like every other.

Life is filled with ups and downs. Life is filled with all types of emotions and challenges that come up on a daily basis and we choose how we respond to life situations. We cannot be happy all the time, not only because thats chemically impossible, but we would get bored of it. If we were living without sadness, anger, fear or disgust (shoutout Inside Out), we would not appreciate the moments that make us happy.

There is no such thing as a constant state of happiness.

“But what if I had a lot of money?

Even if you have money there will still be problems that arise. The problems will be different from the ones you have now but there will still be challenges.

For example: let’s say you have a billion dollars and you want to buy a home in downtown Toronto to rebuild. You would still have to go through the entire process of buying the home, refurbishing it and doing the paper work. What if you buy the house and it has flooding issues, what if there are ants and roaches in the house? What if you have loud neighbours? These bring some new challenges. Yes you would be able to solve them with money but there will still be problems and we would still have a variety of emotions that come up in your life.

The point I am trying to make is that we need to embrace our variety of emotions at every stage of life. We need to accept life for what it is, a constant flow of challenges and states of emotions. We are only in control of our own actions.

Happiness is an emotion like any other.  We need to embrace every emotion, feel them and let them go because life is about the challenges and what we learn from them. What we do with the time we have on this planet is on us and nobody else so let make the most of it!

Listen to your emotions, feel them, feel the pain, feel the anger, feel the sadness, feel the joy! Feel everything and then see how life responds to you.
